Council Tax Disabled Band Reduction Scheme

Local councils (England, Scotland, Wales)

Description

Reduces a household's Council Tax to the rate of the next band down where the property has been adapted or has extra space to meet the needs of a disabled resident (adult or child), so disabled people don't pay more Council Tax for needing a larger home.

Amount

Bill reduced to the rate of the next Council Tax band down (e.g. a Band D property is charged at the Band C rate); properties already in the lowest band get an equivalent percentage reduction instead

Deadline

Rolling / no fixed deadline

Eligibility summary

  • Available in: England, Scotland, Wales.
  • Open to individuals — not restricted to businesses.
Notes
Having a disability alone doesn't guarantee a reduction — the extra room/space must be shown to be of major importance given the nature/extent of the disability. Properties already in the lowest band (Band A in England/Wales) get an equivalent cash reduction rather than a further band drop. Each of England, Scotland and Wales runs the scheme under its own council tax legislation with the same underlying mechanism; Northern Ireland uses a different system (domestic rates) — see the separate Disabled Person's Allowance (Northern Ireland) entry.
Requirement
The property is the main residence of a 'substantially and permanently disabled' person (adult or child, doesn't have to be the bill-payer), and has at least one of: an extra bathroom/kitchen needed for the disabled person, another room predominantly used by them and essential to their wellbeing, or extra indoor space for wheelchair use (outdoor-only wheelchair use doesn't qualify).

This one is usually simple enough to do yourself using the free official link below — but if you'd rather have help, we're building relationships with vetted professionals and can let you know if that becomes available.

Some of the organisations we may connect you with pay us a referral fee if you use their service. This never affects which listings you see in the directory. No live partner is confirmed yet for this listing.

You can also do this yourself for free via the official source

How to apply

Apply directly to your local council's Council Tax team, typically with evidence from an occupational therapist or similar professional confirming the adaptation/need.
