Free School Meals (Northern Ireland)

Education Authority (Department of Education Northern Ireland)

Details being confirmed

Some figures on this page (such as the amount, deadline, or rate) are provisional and due a fresh verification pass against the official source. Please confirm the current details using the official link below before relying on this information.

Description

Northern Ireland's free school meals scheme is entirely means-tested, with no universal (non-income-tested) provision at any age — unlike England, Scotland and Wales, all of which give at least some year groups a free lunch regardless of income. Administered by the Education Authority rather than a single DfE-style national application. For 2026/27, a household on Universal Credit qualifies if net household earnings after tax are £15,900/year or less (up from £15,390 in 2025/26).

Amount

A free lunch every school day for pupils in qualifying households — no universal (non-means-tested) provision exists in Northern Ireland.

Deadline

Rolling / no fixed deadline

Eligibility summary

  • Available in: Northern Ireland.
  • Open to individuals — not restricted to businesses.
  • Relevant income bands: earning under the Personal Allowance.
  • Relevant age groups: under 18.
Notes
A 2023 Department of Education consultation set out options to introduce universal free school meals from nursery to P3 (an estimated extra 59,500 children, ~£46m/year) or nursery to P7 (an estimated extra 132,100 children, ~£103m/year), but as of this research pass (October 2026) no decision to introduce universal provision had been confirmed — a live, unresolved policy question worth re-checking in future passes. Northern Ireland's qualifying-benefit list (sourced from nidirect.gov.uk) notably does not include Income Support or income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, unlike Wales's equivalent list, which may reflect those legacy benefits having closed to new/existing claims under Universal Credit migration — not independently confirmed for Northern Ireland specifically in this pass, so flagged for review alongside the income threshold itself (eani.org.uk, the Education Authority's own site, returned a 403 to automated fetching and could not be used to cross-check nidirect.gov.uk's figures directly).
Requirement
Household receives Universal Credit with net household earnings after tax of £15,900/year or less (2026/27), income-related Employment and Support Allowance, the guarantee element of Pension Credit, or support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 — or the child themselves receives Universal Credit, has a statement of special educational needs designating a need for a special diet, or boards at a special school.
