Motability Scheme

Motability Operations (charity-overseen, using the mobility component of a qualifying DWP/Social Security Scotland benefit)

Description

Lets recipients of the enhanced/higher mobility rate of a qualifying disability benefit exchange that payment for the lease of an accessible car, scooter, or powered wheelchair — insurance, breakdown cover, servicing, maintenance, and tyres are typically included in the lease.

Amount

Enhanced PIP mobility component (£80.00/week, 2026/27) or equivalent qualifying benefit paid directly to Motability Operations to cover most or all of the lease cost; some vehicles require an additional one-off Advance Payment

Deadline

Rolling / no fixed deadline

Eligibility summary

  • Available across the whole UK (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland).
  • Open to individuals — not restricted to businesses.
Notes
Not itself a government scheme — it's a private lease arrangement that uses your qualifying mobility payment as (all or part of) the lease cost. From 1 July 2026, new VAT and Insurance Premium Tax rules apply to Motability leases, which Motability has estimated will add around £400 to the average upfront Advance Payment over a typical 3-year lease — factor this in when comparing costs.
Requirement
Receipt of the enhanced/higher mobility rate of PIP, the higher rate mobility component of DLA, Adult Disability Payment or Child Disability Payment (Scotland), War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement, or Armed Forces Independence Payment, with at least 12 months' award length remaining.
