Description

In Wales, councils can't charge more than £100 a week for non-residential care and support, such as home care, day services or community support, however much care someone receives and whatever their savings. For people with substantial home care packages, this caps what they pay however large the package is. Councils still carry out a financial assessment, so some people pay less than the cap.

Notes
Verified Oct 2026: the Welsh Government's charging for social care page gives the weekly maximum as £100. The Isle of Anglesey County Council's 27 January 2026 report confirms the Welsh Government kept the cap at £100 a week for 2026-27, after a 2024 consultation on raising it (options of £15, £20 or £25 a week) didn't lead to an increase. The same gov.wales page gives a £50,000 capital limit for residential care; above it you may pay the full cost of a care home. That's a separate rule, noted here for context. If your council quotes a weekly charge above £100 for non-residential care, query it.
Requirement
Receiving care and support at home or in the community (not in a care home) arranged by a Welsh local authority after a care and support assessment. Applies automatically: your financial assessment can't produce a charge above the maximum.

How to apply

No separate application. Ask your local council's social services for a care and support assessment; the cap is applied automatically when it works out your charge in the financial assessment.
