Description

Grants to improve the external appearance of retail premises — new signage, shopfronts, lighting, and improved access — across North Tyneside's Wallsend, North Shields, and North West (Weetslade, Camperdown, Killingworth) town centres and high streets, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund via the former North of Tyne Combined Authority and now administered by the North East Combined Authority.

Amount

Up to £5,000 (Wallsend) or up to £2,500 (North Shields and North West wards)

Deadline

Rolling / no fixed deadline

Eligibility summary

  • Available in: England.
  • Applicant must be a registered business.
  • Most relevant to: Retail.
Notes
Grant caps differ by area: up to £5,000 in Wallsend, up to £2,500 in North Shields/North West wards. The Wallsend scheme launched first; the North Shields extension followed with a dedicated town centre liaison officer based locally two days a week. Awarded first-come, first-served. RE-ATTEMPTED (23 Aug 2026): northtyneside.gov.uk remains completely blocked site-wide — this officialUrl and its bare-domain equivalent both 302-redirect to my.northtyneside.gov.uk, which renders "Access denied" even via a full browser navigation, and the legacy.northtyneside.gov.uk copy of the scheme's criteria PDF redirects the same way. A WebSearch did turn up corroborating detail matching the figures recorded here (a newcastleworld.com report on Wallsend grants of up to £5,000, and a council criteria/application-guidance PDF filename referencing "NS & NW" — North Shields & North West — for 2025), so the scheme itself is plausibly still current, but no live page could be reached to confirm the current round is open. Re-check before referring users.
Requirement
Retail businesses with a ground-floor shop unit (or doorway access to an upper-floor commercial premises) in the designated Wallsend, North Shields, or North West North Tyneside high-street areas.
