Description

Disabled people who get the highest-rate mobility part of certain disability benefits pay no vehicle tax on one vehicle. People on the standard rate mobility component of PIP or Adult Disability Payment get 50% off. The vehicle can be registered to the disabled person or to a nominated driver, such as a family member, as long as it's used for the disabled person's needs. It's handled by DVLA and applies across the UK. Separate from the Motability Scheme, which is listed as a separate entry.

Eligibility summary

  • Available across the whole UK (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland).
  • Open to individuals — not restricted to businesses.
Notes
Verified Oct 2026 against gov.uk's 'Financial help if you're disabled: vehicles and transport' page. For the exemption, the vehicle must be used only for the disabled person's personal needs, not the nominated driver's own use. The first exemption claim must be made at a Post Office and claimed again each time you change vehicle. The 50% reduction is claimed by post to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BF with: proof of your PIP or ADP rate and payment dates (a DWP or Social Security Scotland decision letter); the V5C logbook; a V10 form; an MOT certificate and original GVT certificate if needed; a cheque or payable order for 50% of the full rate; and, in Northern Ireland, an insurance certificate or cover note. That Northern Ireland requirement confirms the reduction applies there too. Don't send your PIP assessment or other medical information. If the vehicle isn't yet in your name, include a V62 and the green new keeper slip. If it's registered to someone else, include a signed letter from the registered keeper explaining how they know you and how the vehicle will be used.
Requirement
Full exemption: you get the higher rate mobility component of DLA; the enhanced rate mobility component of PIP or Adult Disability Payment; Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance; the higher rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment; War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement; or Armed Forces Independence Payment. 50% reduction: you get the standard rate mobility component of PIP or Adult Disability Payment (DLA lower rate mobility doesn't qualify). One vehicle only, registered to the disabled person or their nominated driver.
