Winter Fuel Payment

Department for Work and Pensions

Description

Updated August 2026: eligibility is now age-based rather than means-tested via Pension Credit — you qualify if born on or before 27 June 1960 and living in England or Wales during the qualifying week (21–27 September 2026). The amount is £200 or £300 depending on age, but anyone with individual taxable income over £35,000/year has the equivalent amount recovered afterwards by HMRC (via tax code or Self Assessment) rather than being refused the payment upfront. Most pensioners are still paid automatically; some need to make a claim.

Amount

£200 (born 28 September 1946 – 27 June 1960) or £300 (born on or before 27 September 1946); recovered via tax if individual income exceeds £35,000/year — 2026/27 rules

Deadline

Rolling / no fixed deadline

Eligibility summary

  • Available in: England, Wales, Northern Ireland.
  • Open to individuals — not restricted to businesses.
  • Relevant age groups: 65+.
Notes
Applies to England and Wales (this scheme's qualifying-week/age-threshold rules); Northern Ireland delivers an equivalent via the Department for Communities. Scotland runs its own separate 'Pension Age Winter Heating Payment' rather than this DWP scheme — do not surface this entry to Scottish residents. The £35,000 income threshold is an individual test (not household) and a partner's income doesn't count; if income exceeds it, HMRC recovers the payment afterwards rather than it being withheld.
